Not many would have given Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s team a chance to win the World Cup after Sri Lanka posted 274 in the title clash at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday.
Firstly, no team has successfully chased down so high a target in a World Cup final. Secondly, India have not won against Sri Lanka while chasing in the eight finals between the two sides since 2000.

But Dhoni’s men defied all odds to win back the Cup after 28 years. India are already the No 1 team in Tests and won the inaugural T20 World Championship in 2007. Now, they are on the brink of becoming the No 1 in the ODIs as well.

Former India skipper and chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar said Team India should aim to be invincible.
“It is an amazing victory and there is no better joy than bringing back the World Cup. It is important that the team does not rest on its laurels and thrives to be invincible,” the former chairman of selectors told MiD DAY yesterday.

“We have got an excellent side. We need to look for some good bowlers. There are a few right now, but we have to unearth some more good bowlers to become a dominant side,” added Vengsarkar, a member of the 1983 World Cup-winning team.

Vengsarkar said Dhoni and Co helped erase the bitter memories of the 1987 World Cup semi-final loss against England at the Wankhede Stadium.

“Winning the World Cup in 1983 was obviously special, but Dhoni’s team made up for the loss we suffered at this venue in the semis (in 1987),” said Vengsarkar, who missed that match due to a stomach disorder.

Vengsarkar was heartened to see youngsters playing a crucial role in seeing India home on Saturday.
“We played extremely well. Everybody contributed in this win. It was good to see youngsters (Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir made 35 and 97 respectively) rising to the occasion after Viru (Virender Sehwag) and Sachin (Tendulkar) got out early,” he said.
