AI strike enters 4th day, airline to operate just 39 flights

(PTI) Air India today further reduced its operations to 39 domestic flights out of its regular 320 as the strike by its pilots entered the fourth day inconveniencing passengers.

“We have curtailed more than 52 per cent of our domestic flights and operating on only trunk routes that is too metro cities,” an AI spokesperson said.

“Under the contingency plan, we have reduced the number of flights as we don not have any pilots,” he said.

While 21 flights will be operated from the national capital, Air India’s Mumbai operations have almost come to a standstill as the airline may operate just five flights between 9 and 11 30 am, an AI spokeswoman said in Mumbai.The national carrier did not undertake any operations from Mumbai before 9 am.

Terrorists safe havens in Pak a challenge: Pentagon

(PTI) Continued presence of terrorist safe havens and role of certain “actors” in Pakistan remains a challenge in the war against terror, a US defence official has said.

“The concern about the role of safe havens in Pakistan and the role of actors in Pakistan, including the Haqqani Network, the Afghan Taliban who are located primarily, the leadership is located either in the south or in the north around Peshawar, that remains a significant challenge,” a senior defense official said at a Pentagon briefing.

Pentagon has sent its six-monthly report to the Congress on progress made in Afghanistan, the official said, adding that the United States is looking for continued and increased cooperation with the Pakistanis on the border.

India can be economically developed by 2020: Kalam

(PTI) India can become economically developed by 2020 if it maintains a GDP of 10-11 per cent as there are nine more years to achieve ‘Vision 2020′ goals, former President A P J Abdul Kalam said.

“We have nine more years for 2020 and if we maintain 10-11 percent GDP we will be economically developed,” he said before a gathering of prominent Indian businessmen and social leaders at Indian Consulate here.

Kalam was speaking about the success of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and his ‘Vision 2020′ to make India economically developed by 2020 at the banquet organised by Indian Consul General, in Chicago, Mukta Dutta Tomar in his honour earlier this week.

He said that India’s “economic growth must sustain population growth.”

Speaking on India-Pakistan relations the former president said he was confident that India and Pakistan can work for people’s economic development.

AI to suspend bookings for 5 days as more pilots join stir

(PTI) With more pilots joining the ongoing strike, Air India management has decided to suspend the bookings for the next five days in order to tackle the situation arising out of the stir.

About 200 executive pilots have also joined the strike by pilots associated with the Indian Commercial Pilots’ Association (ICPA). Taking this into account, the airline has decided to suspend the bookings for the next five days, a senior official said.

Earlier today, Civil Aviation Minister Vayalar Ravi met the Prime Minister to apprise him of the situation and later briefed the Cabinet.

Ravi is understood to have said that he had taken a firm view of the situation and fully supported the actions by the Air India management against the striking pilots.

He also apprised the Cabinet of festering issues that arose after the merger of erstwhile Indian Airlines with Air India and still remain unaddressed.

‘Pentagon lists mosques where Al Qaeda recruited’

(AFP) Al Qaeda recruited and trained militants at mosques and Islamic centers in cities around the world from Montreal to Karachi, according to a leaked Pentagon list.

The document used by American interrogators in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, lists among them the Al-Sunna mosque in Montreal, Abu Bakr International University in Karachi, the Dimaj Institute in Sadah (Yemen), the Finsbury Park mosque in north London, the Islamic Cultural Institute mosque in Milan (Italy), Laennec mosque in Lyon (France), and the Wazir Akbar Khan mosque in Kabul, as per list leaked yesterday.

In Lyon, the rector of the grand mosque expressed outrage over the list and said the allegation that the Laennec mosque was used by Al-Qaeda was “ridiculous.

DMK angry over inclusion of Kanimozhi’s name

(PTI) DMK did not not walk out of the UPA alliance at the Centre today over the 2G issue and decided to fight the case legally.

After a meeting of the party’s High-Level Committee, DMK President and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister expressed ‘anguish’ over inclusion Kanimozhi’s name in the second charge sheet in the spectrum allocation case by CBI and said they would fight the issue legally to prove the their innocence of his daughter and the party in court.

‘We will take legal steps to prove the truth’, he told reporters.

Ever since the supplementary charge sheeting naming Kanimozhi as an accused was filed in a Delhi court on Monday, there has been speculation that DMK might adopt a hard line and could even think of quitting the Central ministry.

Dinakaran moves SC against impeachment proceedings

(PTI) Sikkim High Court Chief Justice P D Dinakaran today moved the Supreme Court seeking stay of the impeachment proceedings initiated against him for alleged misconduct and corruption.

Justice Dinakaran challenged the proceedings before a three-member Rajya Sabha-appointed inquiry panel which has been hearing the charges of alleged land grabbing and possession of wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income.

He has sought quashing of the order of the panel which has refused his plea for the recusal of senior advocate P P Rao on the ground that he was biased against him.

The panel, headed by Justice Aftab Alam of the Supreme Court, also includes Karnataka High Court Chief Justice J S Khehar, besides Rao.

Kalmadi remanded in CBI custody for eight days

(PTI) Sacked CWG Organising Committee chief Suresh Kalmadi, arrested on charges of cheating, conspiracy and corruption in connection with awarding some Games contracts, was today remanded in CBI custody for eight days by a Delhi Court for custodial interrogation.

The other two arrested OC officials Surjeet Lal, Deputy Director General (Procurement), and A S V Prasad, Joint Director General (Sport), were also remanded in CBI custody till May 4 by Special CBI judge Talwant Singh.

The CBI had yesterday arrested Kalmadi, Lal and Prasad for allegedly awarding illegal contracts to a Swiss firm for Timing-Scoring-Result (TSR) system for the Games causing a loss of Rs 95 crore to the exchequer.

The agency had sought 14 days’ custody of 66-year-old Kalmadi and his associates contending that they have to be interrogated to unearth the money trail in the scam.

CBI charge sheets Kanimozhi, 4 others in 2G scam

(PTI) The CBI today filed its second charge sheet in the 2G spectrum case naming Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi’s daughter and MP Kanimozhi and four others as accused.

However, the CBI has not named Karunanidhi’s wife Dayaluammal, whose name had figured in the 2G probe, as the accused in the supplementary charge sheet filed before Special judge O P Saini.

Others who have been charge sheeted along with Kanimozhi are Kalaignar TV Managing Director Sharad Kumar, Swan Telecom promoter Shahid Usman Balwa’s cousin Asif Balwa, Rajeev Agarwal — Directors of Kusegaon Fruits and Vegetables Pvt Ltd, and Karim Murani of Cineyug Films (Pvt) Ltd.

Kanimozhi has been charged with section 7 and 11 of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The sections deal with acceptance of alleged gratification.
