Raju promises to carry forward Sibal’’s good work

New Delhi, Oct 31 (PTI) New HRD Minister M M Pallam Raju today said he would reach out to “everybody” to build a consensus on passage of pending bills on higher education in Parliament, and promised to consolidate “good work” initiated by his predecessor like in the case of IITs.

At the same time, Raju underlined on introducing chapters on moral values in course curriculum to help the present generation imbibe good values passed through generations.

Nilam intensifies into severe cyclonic storm

Chennai, Oct 31 (PTI) Cyclone ‘Nilam’ today intensified into a severe storm with extremely heavy rainfall expected over North coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry even as the weather department warned of extensive damage to huts, standing crops and power lines.

The cyclone is expected to cross between Puducherry and Nellore in Andhra Pradesh close to Chennai this evening.

Sonia Gandhi hits out at BJP over corruption

Shimla, Oct 30 (PTI) Unruffled by the BJP campaign against Congress on corruption, Sonia Gandhi today lashed out at the party accusing it of adopting double standards and not taking action against its own leaders facing graft charges.

“BJP will have to be answerable and accountable to people and tell what action it has taken against its own leaders facing charges of corruption,” the AICC President said.

Depression turns into cyclone; to cross TN-AP coast tomorrow

Chennai, Oct 30 (PTI) A deep depression lying 500 km south east of Chennai has intensified into a cyclonic storm and is expected to cross the coast between Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu and Nellore in Andhra Pradesh tomorrow, bringing in torrential rains in the region.

The system, named ‘Nilam’, as suggested by Pakistan under the cyclone naming procedure, would move northwestwards and cross the coast between Nagapattinam and Nellore by tomorrow afternoon/evening.

Govt under fire for promoting those facing corruption charges

New Delhi, Oct 29 (PTI) The shifting of S Jaipal Reddy from Petroleum Ministry and elevation of Salman Khurshid today kicked up a political storm with parties suspecting the government of coming under corporate pressure and accusing it of promoting those facing corruption charges.

Sharp comments came against yesterday’s Cabinet reshuffle from government’s outside supporter Samajwadi Party, which raised questions about the elevation of Khurshid as External Affairs Minister and the continuation of a minister allegedly involved in Coal scam.

Two Air India flights delayed due to Hurricane Sandy

New Delhi, Oct 29 (PTI) Air India today said its Mumbai-Newark and Delhi-New York flights have been “indefinitely delayed” due to Hurricane Sandy which is set to hit the East Coast of the United States.

An Air India spokesperson said AI 191 Mumbai-Newark and AI 101 Delhi-New York have been indefinitely delayed due to the hurricane.

Passengers have been informed and transit passengers have been provided hotel accommodation in Delhi, the spokesperson said.

Evacuations begin as US braces for huge storm

President calls Thackeray to inquire about health

Mumbai, Oct 28 (PTI) President Pranab Mukherjee, whose candidature to the top post was backed by Shiv Sena, called up ailing Sena chief Bal Thackeray to inquire about his health.

The phone call from the President came yesterday afternoon, sources at the Thackeray residence ‘Matoshree’ said.

Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamna’ today published news of the President making detailed inquiries about Thackeray’s health.
