Govt agrees to delink state Lokayukta from central legislation

New Delhi, Jan 29 (PTI) Seeking to adopt a middle path, the government has agreed to delink state Lokayukta from the central legislation and to the appointment of the Director of Prosecution by the CVC, accepting some key recommendations of the Rajya Sabha Select Committee on anti-corruption ombudsman.

Yashwant Sinha pitches for Modi as BJP’s PM candidate

New Delhi, Jan 28 (PTI) Senior leader Yashwant Sinha today fired the first shot openly pitching for declaring Narendra Modi as BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate in the next Lok Sabha elections, saying it will benefit the party hugely.

Contending that he was reflecting the mood of the country and BJP workers, he advised JD(U), which has reservations on Modi because of the 2002 Gujarat riots, not to target the chief minister but take a decision after careful consideration.

Gangrape case: Sixth accused declared minor by JJB

New Delhi, Jan 28 (PTI) The sixth accused in the case of December 16 gangrape and murder of a 23-year-old paramedical student here was today declared by the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) as a “minor”, which would enable him to walk free by June 4, this year when he attains the age of 18 years.

Govt putting off decision on Telangana “betrayal” of people

New Delhi, Jan 27 (PTI) Dubbing Centre’s move to defer its decision on Telangana as a “betrayal” of the people, the BJP today asked the Government to stick to its earlier deadline by announcing the formation of a separate state before Monday evening.

Party leader Prakash Javadekar also accused the Congress of “playing with the sentiments” of the people of Telangana and warned that their patience cannot be taken for granted for long.

“Today’s statement is nothing but backing out.

‘Shocked’ I-T officers body demands apology from Gadkari

Decision on Telangana deferred yet again

New Delhi/Hyderabad, Jan 27 (PTI) A decision on the Telangana statehood demand was deferred today with the Centre and Congress saying there was need for “further consultations” which will take a “little more time” even as pro-Telangana activists intensified their agitation.

On the eve of the one-month deadline set by him to arrive at a decision on the contentious issue, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and the Congress spoke on similar lines seeking more time to resolve the matter.

“Free man” Gadkari threatens his IT tormentors

Nagpur, Jan 24 (PTI) A day after becoming a “free man”, Nitin Gadkari today held out a threat to Income Tax authorities, probing dubious fundings in the Purti group with which he was associated, saying nobody would save them when BJP comes rpt comes to power at the Centre.

“As BJP president I had to maintain dignity and work within boundaries….Now I am a free man.

SC questions Centre power to allocate coal blocks

New Delhi, Jan 24 (PTI) The Supreme Court today questioned Centre’s power to allocate coal blocks to companies, saying it has a lot of “legal explanation” to do as the statutory Act empowers only the states to undertake this task.

The apex court said that the Centre cannot undermine the the Mines and Minerals Act which has given no power to it to allocate coal block to companies.
