SP, BSP slam Budget, Mulayam says he will oppose it Par

New Delhi, Feb 28 (PTI) Samajwadi Party and BSP, outside supporters of UPA government, today slammed the Union Budget, describing it as “anti-farmer, anti-worker and anti-poor” with Mulayam Singh Yadav vowing to oppose it in Parliament.

“This budget has completely ignored the farmers. It is only meant for 10 per cent population, while the interests of 65 per cent engaged in farming have been ignored. SP will oppose the Budget in Parliament,” Yadav told reporters outside Parliament.

Budget lays roadmap for investment: PM

New Delhi, Feb 28 (PTI) Hailing the budget, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday said it would reverse the pessimistic mood and lay the roadmap for investments as he expressed confidence of returning to eight per cent growth within three years.

Singh listed fiscal deficit, inflation and current account deficit as three barriers that can affect the realisation of the growth potential of the economy.

19 killed, 10 injured in devastating fire in Kolkata

Kolkata, Feb 27 (PTI) A major fire engulfed a five-storey market complex housing shops storing mainly plastics and paper in Sealdah area of the city today, leaving 19 people dead and 10 others injured.

The fire was detected at 3.50 AM in the 25-year-old Surya Sen Market complex housing a godown-cum-office complex when the victims, mostly labourers working in the market, were sleeping, vice-chairman of the market Sushanta Ghose said.

Subsidy should be slashed: Economic Survey

New Delhi, Feb 27 (PTI) Claiming that the “downturn is more or less over”, the pre-Budget Economic Survey today projected an optimistic 6.1 to 6.7 per cent growth in the next fiscal and made a strong call for cutting subsidises.

New Delhi, Feb 26 (PTI) Continuing efforts to clean up Railway finances, the Budget for 2013-14 on Tuesday effected an across-the-board 5.8 per cent hike in freight charges to net in Rs 4,200 crore a year while raising passenger reservation and related charges to rake in an additional Rs 483 crore.

President seeks report about Tagore sites in Shillong

Shillong, Feb 25 (PTI) President Pranab Mukherjee has sought report from the Meghalaya government with regards to renovating historic sites associated with Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore during his stay in this North East city in the 1920s.

In a letter to the Meghalaya Chief Secretary P Barkos Warjri, the Presidents office has sought an action taken report from the state government on renovations of Tagores bungalows in Shillong seeking “appropriate attention” in this regard.

Efforts on to develop tech for hypersonic version of BrahMos

Tiruchirappalli (TN), Feb 25 (PTI) BrahMos Aerospace, an Indo-Russian joint venture, has initiated efforts to develop technology for hypersonic version of the BrahMos missile which can travel at five to seven times the speed of sound, a top company official has said.

“The company is roping in academics to develop the requisite technology before going in for designing and developing missiles which can travel at Mach 5 to 7 (five to seven times the speed of sound).
