Chennai, Mar 25 (PTI) Amid protests in support of Sri Lankan Tamils in Tamil Nadu, both ruling AIADMK and Karunanidhi-led DMK today mounted pressure on the Centre demanding that India boycott the CHOGM to be held in Colombo this November.

PM leaves for Durban to attend BRICS Summit

Mulayam slams ’sycophants’ in UP govt, asks CM to crack whip

Lucknow, Mar 23 (PTI) Slamming ministers and officers for tarnishing the image of Samajwadi Party government in Uttar Pradesh by indulging in “sycophancy”, party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav today asked his son and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav to be a strict administrator.

“Akhilesh, the government is not run by flexibility, but by (taking) tough stand,” the SP supremo said during a speech here on the occasion of the 103rd birth anniversary of Ram Manohar Lohia.

Chidambaram promises more reforms

New Delhi, Mar 23 (PTI) Announcing further liberalisation of FII investment norms, Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Saturday said the government is “steadily and surely” working on next generation of reforms to put the economy back on high growth path.

Addressing the National Editors Conference here, he said with liberalisation of FDI and other measures, the government has travelled considerable distance on the road to fiscal consolidation and reforms.

Pak prosecutors seek Mumbai attacks accused voice samples

Islamabad, Mar 22 (PTI) Pakistani prosecutors have approached a court seeking permission to obtain voice samples of seven men, including LeT operations commander Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, charged with involvement in the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

Special prosecutor Chaudhry Zulfiqar Ali of the Federal Investigation Agency filed the petition, which was admitted for regular hearing by the Islamabad High Court yesterday.

The petition further asked the court to declare Indian national Fahim Ansari a “proclaimed offender” or fugitive.

Italy assured marines will not face death penalty: Govt

New Delhi, Mar 22 (PTI) With Italy reversing its decision of not sending back its two marines, the government today said it had assured that country that the accused in fishermen killing case will not face death penalty and will not be arrested if they returned by the deadline of today set by the Supreme Court.

Bangladesh begins 3-day state mourning at president’s death

Dhaka, Mar 21 (PTI) The body of Bangladesh President Zillur Rahman, who died at a hospital in Singapore was brought to Dhaka today, as the country began observing a three-day state mourning for the veteran leader.

Rahman, 85, died yesterday at a Singapore hospital where he was being treated for kidney and respiratory problems.

UNHRC adopts US-sponsored resolution against Lanka

Geneva, Mar 21 (PTI) The UN Human Rights Council today adopted a US-sponsored resolution on human rights violation in Sri Lanka with 25 countries, including India, voting in favour of the document in the 47-nation strong body.

While 13 countries, including Pakistan, voted against, eight member-states abstained from voting on the contentious resolution that saw political tremors in India with DMK pulling out of the UPA alliance and the government. Gabon, a member-country had voting rights issue.

Chennai, Mar 20 (PTI) Protests over the Sri Lankan Tamils issue continued all over the state today with CPI(M) and BJP also holding agitations.

In Chennai, protests including demonstrations, were held by the advocates of Madras High Court, CPI (M) under its state unit secretary G Ramakrishnan, BJP’s youth wing and the recently founded Aam Aadmi Party.
