Spl assembly session to take up Janlokpal bill at IG stadium

New Delhi, Jan 31 (PTI) Delhi Cabinet today decided to call a special session of Assembly to take up the Jan Lokpal Bill that seeks to punish corrupt officials on February 16 at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium instead of historic Ramlila ground as announced by ruling AAP earlier.

Rahul corrupt, will field candidate agst him: Kejriwal

New Delhi, Jan 31 (PTI) Targeting Rahul Gandhi, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today accused him of being corrupt and said the party will field candidates against him, UPA ministers and leaders of other parties.
He also took a jibe at BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and the Congress Vice-President for spending over “Rs 500 crore on branding” and image-building exercise.
Drawing up a list of “corrupt” politicians, Kejriwal said the party will field candidates against them.

AP Assembly rejects Telangana Bill by voice vote

Hyderabad, Jan 30 (PTI) In an embarrassment for the Centre, the Andhra Pradesh Assembly today passed by voice vote a resolution moved by Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy rejecting the AP Reorganisation Bill-2013 which entails creation of separate Telangana state.
Capping an acrimonious debate and ending the pandemonium the House was stuck in for the past few days, Speaker Nadendla Manohar put the resolution to vote and announced that it was “passed”.
The Assembly was immediately adjourned sine die.

Govt hikes subsidised LPG cylinder quota to 12 per year

New Delhi, Jan 30 (PTI) Bowing to party pressure, the government today raised the quota of subsidised LPG to 12 cylinders per household in a year from nine at present and also put on hold paying users the subsidy into bank accounts using Aadhaar platform.
Announcing the decision taken by the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs, Oil Minister M Veerappa Moily said raising the LPG quota will cost Rs 5,000 crore in additional subsidy annually.

AAP leaders not providing info on party funding: Centre to HC

New Delhi, Jan 29 (PTI) The Centre today told the Delhi High Court that AAP leaders, including Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, have not provided the information sought by them on the funding received by the party.
“We have asked for certain details from them regarding bank accounts and other information vide our letter dated November 4, 2013. We had also sent another letter to them.

No PM can revoke J&K’s special status: Omar

London, Jan 29 (PTI) Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said no Prime Minister can revoke Article 370 of the Constitution granting special status to the state “without calling into question” its accession to India.
Dismissing a question on whether he was worried at the prospect of BJP’s Narendra Modi becoming the Prime Minister, Omar said, “it does not matter whether he is the Prime Minister or the President or (holds) any other position.

8 dead, 14 injured in bus-tanker collision in Thane district

Buxar, Jan 28 (PTI) Nine persons, mostly girls, went missing in a boat mishap in river Ganga in Chausa block of Bihar’s Buxar district today, police said.

As per information collected from people on board the boat, 21 persons were returning home after working in field in Palia village in Uttar Pradesh when the vessel capsized, Superintendent of Police Babu Ram said.

US to focus on Asia-Pacific for greater security:President Barack Obama

Washington, Jan 29 (PTI) The US will continue to focus on the Asia-Pacific region and shape a future of greater security, President Barack Obama said today, even as he vowed to veto any Congressional bill imposing new sanctions on Iran to give “diplomacy a chance to succeed”.

In his sixth annual address to the Congress, Obama touched upon various areas of the world, emphasising on key aspects of his foreign policy.

SC refuses to review verdict criminalising gay sex

New Delhi, Jan 28 (PTI) The Supreme Court today refused to relook into its verdict criminalising gay sex in the country.

A bench of Justices H L Dattu and S J Mukhopadhaya, in inchamber proceedings, dismissed a bunch of petitions filed by the Centre and gay rights activists against its December 2013 verdict declaring gay sex an offence punishable up to life imprisonment.

Cong-NC coalition could split; Omar may resign

New Delhi, Jan 28 (PTI) The ruling coalition between the Congress and the National Conference (NC) in Jammu and Kashmir may split amid indications that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was considering resigning following sharp differences between the two parties.

The state leadership of the Congress is stonewalling Omar’s cherished scheme of creating some 700 new administrative units in the state ahead of the April-May Lok Sabha polls and the scheduled Assembly elections in October- November this year.
