Rajiv case: Supreme Court restrains Tamil Nadu govt from releasing 4 convicts

New Delhi, Feb 27 (PTI) After staying release of three convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, the Supreme Court today restrained the Tamil Nadu government from letting out four more convicts in the case.

A bench headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam directed the state government to maintain status quo and said it will hear on March 6 the Centre’s plea against the state government’s decision to release all seven prisoners undergoing life imprisonment.

Need for self-correcting mechanism to check paid news: Prez

New Delhi, Feb 27 (PTI) Voicing concern over the practise of “paid news” by some publications to mop up revenue, President Pranab Mukherjee today said there was a need for a “self-correcting mechanism” to check such aberrations.

Describing media as a “crystal ball” being gazed by millions of Indians, he said, “The nation faces critical challenges that go well beyond the pressure of ‘Breaking News’ and immediate headlines.

Submarine mishap: 7 Navy personnel injured, 2 missing

Mumbai/New Delhi, Feb 26 (PTI) Seven Navy personnel were today injured and two officers unaccounted for in a mishap on board Russian-origin Kilo Class submarine INS Sindhuratna, 80 kms off the Mumbai coast.

Dense smoke filled the cabin of the submarine in the morning when Commodore Commanding Submarine (COMCOS), Western Command, was carrying out an inspection before it was to be cleared for operational duties, a Navy officer said.

Shinde does a U-turn, says he was referring to social media not journalism

Sholapur (Maharashtra), Feb 25 (PTI) After threatening to “crush” the electronic media, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde did a U-turn, claiming he was referring to the social media and not journalists.

“I have recording of my speech. I was referring to social media and the violence incited against students from the Northeast in Hyderabad and Karnataka. My comments were not about journalism”, he said here last night.

Nitish trashes Lalu’s charge,says RJD MLAs welcome to join JDU

New Delhi, Feb 25 (PTI) Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today said the JD(U) would welcome rebel RJD MLAs into its fold and rejected allegations that the Assembly Speaker worked at his behest by hurriedly giving recognition to the breakaway faction.

In Delhi to attend a meeting of non-Congress, non-BJP front, Kumar told reporters that there are differences in Lalu Prasad-led RJD and the party is “on the verge of a split”.

Rajiv case: Centre moves SC for stay on release of four convicts

New Delhi, Feb 24 (PTI) After having secured a stay on release of three convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, the Centre today moved the apex court to prevent implementation of Tamil Nadu government’s decision to set free four other convicts serving life imprisonment in the case.

A bench headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam agreed to hear the Centre’s plea on February 27.

Rahul accuses BJP of practicing “politics of blood”

Dehradun, Feb 23 (PTI) Rahul Gandhi today accused BJP of practicing “politics of blood” by pitting one religion against another and one caste against another to come to power at any cost, escalating the Congress attack against the opposition party.

The Congress Vice President also said that UPA government was trying to bring anti-graft ordinances after the opposition “blocked” the passage of these bills in Parliament.

Modi hurls ‘ABCD’ jibe at Cong over graft,rival party counters

Ludhiana/New Delhi, Feb 23 (PTI) Narendra Modi today invoked the ‘ABCD’ jibe at Congress over corruption again, alleging it has become the identity of that party’s “corrupt” activities.

The BJP Prime Ministerial candidate’s attack against Congress triggered an alphabet war with the party countering his taunt with its own definition of ‘ABCD’ targeting him.

Modi levelled the allegation as he tore into the Congress-led UPA government over corruption and price rise.
