CBI probe in Badaun gangrape-murder case, more arrests

Badaun/Lucknow (UP), May 31 (PTI) Under attack over the gangrape and murder of two dalit sisters in Badaun, Akhilesh Yadav government today decided to go for a CBI probe even as five accused, including two cops, were arrested in the case that has sparked nation-wide outrage.

The rape victims’ family today demanded public hanging of the culprits and refused to take compensation saying they want justice.

Vestiges of UPA rule GoMs, EGoMs abolished

New Delhi, May 31 (PTI) Dismantling a legacy of UPA rule, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today abolished all the 30 GoMs and EGoMs and told ministries and departments to take decisions on pending matters.

Announcing the decision to scrap nine Empowered Groups of Ministers and 21 Groups of Ministers, the PMO said this would expedite the process of decision-making and “usher in greater accountability in the system.

Contradictions in Smriti Irani’s election affidavits

New Delhi, May 28 (PTI) Even as a controversy rages over her educational qualification, it has now emerged that HRD minister Smriti Irani had given contradictory declarations in her affidavits in 2004 and 2014 when she contested Lok Sabha election from two different constituencies.

While contesting in 2004 elections from Chandni Chowk in Delhi, the actor-turned politician had claimed that she had a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Row over Article 370 escalates

Prime Minister Narendra Modi takes charge

New Delhi, May 27 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi assumed office today, a day after being sworn-in by President Pranab Mukherjee.

Modi was received at South block office of the PMO by newly appointed Principal Secretary Nripendra Mishra and some other officials.

As soon as he entered his office, he paid obeisance to the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi by offering flower tributes to his photograph.

Modi holds talks with Sharif; raises terror, 26/11 trial

New Delhi, May 27 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised issues of terror and the trial in Mumbai attack case in his first bilateral meeting with Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif here today.

According to sources, Modi raised the issue of slow pace of trial in 26/11 terror case which was being held in Pakistan and as also India’s core concern of terror with the visiting Pakistani leader.

Sharif says will pick up threads of ties from Vajpayee’s rule

Bangalore/Thiruvananthapuram/Chennai, May 25(PTI)Congress chief ministers of Karnataka and Kerala are not attending tomorrow’s swearing-in of Narendra Modi as Prime Minister while there was suspense on whether Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa will participate amid reports that she has decided to boycott it.

In Bangalore, officials said Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will skip the oath-taking ceremony in Delhi tomorrow.

According to schedule released by the Chief Minister’s office for tomorrow, Siddaramaih will be attending several programmes in the city.

Narendra Modi visits Rajghat

New Delhi, May 26 (PTI) Ahead of being sworn in as India’s 15th Prime Minister, Narendra Modi today visited Rajghat and paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi.

Modi spent around 10 minutes at Rajghat, the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi.

A number of Delhi BJP leaders including Harsh Vardhan, Vijay Goel and Vijender Gupta were present at Rajghat.

Sharif to visit India to attend Modi’s swearing-in ceremony

Islamabad, May 24 (PTI) Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will travel to India on Monday to attend the swearing- in ceremony of Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi, ending the suspense over his visit amid reports that there was stiff opposition from hardliners in the establishment here.

An official of the Prime Minister Office told PTI that Sharif accepted the invitation and will visit India on Monday to attend Modi’s oath-taking ceremony.
