‘Jan Dhan’ will not serve much purpose for the poor: Mayawati

Lucknow, Aug 30 (PTI) BSP supremo Mayawati today claimed that the newly-launched ‘Prime Minister Jan Dhan Yojna’ will “not serve” much purpose, as there was a need to give direct monetary benefit to the poor and downtrodden and not merely open bank accounts for them.

“By merely getting the bank accounts opened for the poor would not serve much purpose and not provide any monetary benefit to the poor….

PM Narendra Modi arrives in Japan

Kyoto, Aug 30 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in this Japanese city today on a visit which is expected to see new vistas being opened in bilateral ties with particular focus on cooperation in the fields of defence, civil nuclear and infrastructure besides commerce.

On his first bilateral visit outside the subcontinent as the Prime Minister, Modi arrived at the Osaka International Airport to begin the first leg of his five-day visit to Japan.

New Delhi, Aug 29 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi today greeted people on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi and sought the blessings of Lord Ganesh.

“Ganpati Bappa Maurya….Greetings on Ganesh Chaturthi.

On Ganesh Chaturthi, we bow to Lord Ganesh.

“May Lord Ganesh shower his blessings on us and enrich our lives with peace, joy & wisdom,” the Prime Minister said in a message released by his office.

Najma Heptulla triggers controversy, clarifies

New Delhi, Aug 29 (PTI) Minority Affairs Minister Najma Heptulla has stoked a controversy by reportedly calling all Indians “Hindus”.

However, she sought to clarify her comments today, saying she had called all Indians Hindi, the Arabic term for people living in India and what she said was “not in relation to the religion but in relation to identity as nationality”. She did not call them Hindus, she said.

JK Legislative Council resolution asks Centre to resume talks with Pak

Srinagar, Aug 28 (PTI) Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council today unanimously passed a resolution impressing upon the state government to urge the Centre to resume the process of Indo-Pak dialogue to ensure peace and stability in the sub-continent.

“The House resolves that the state government must urge the Union government to resume process of Indo-Pak dialogue to ensure peace and stability in the sub-continent in general and state of Jammu and Kashmir in particular,” the resolution said.

Modi tweets in Japanese language ahead of his Japan visit

New Delhi, Aug 28 (PTI) In a first, an “excited” Prime Minister Narendra Modi today tweeted in Japanese language ahead of his visit to Japan to strike a chord with its people whose “scale of innovation” he admired.

In a series of tweets, Modi talked about his five-day visit beginning on August 30, saying he looks forward to it and recalled his warm memories of his earlier trip there as Chief Minister of Gujarat.

Ceasefire violations: India-Pak to hold flag meeting

Jammu, Aug 27 (PTI) A day after India lodged a protest with Pakistan over escalating ceasefire violations, the two sides will hold sector commander-level flag meeting today to defuse the situation on the border.

“The flag meeting between BSF and Pak Rangers is scheduled for today along the International Border (IB) in Pargwal forward belt in Akhnoor sector of Jammu”, a BSF officer said.

DGMOs talk: India lodges protest with Pak over ceasefire violations

New Delhi, Aug 26 (PTI) India today lodged a protest with Pakistan over increased border ceasefire violations as top military officials of the two countries held telephonic talks and agreed to hold flag meetings to defuse the situation.

The DGMO (Director General Military Operations) talks were held around 1200 hours for about 10 minutes during which “all relevant issues” were raised, Army officials said here.
