PM hopes visit to US will mark a new chapter in ties

New Delhi, Sep 25 (PTI) Embarking on a high-profile visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today described the US as India’s “vital partner” and said that he was confident that his trip will bridge “many divisions” and mark a “new chapter” in the strategic ties.

In a pre-deparature statement, Modi said he will discuss with President Barack Obama how the ties can be taken to a “new level” in the interest of the two countries as well as of the world.

Modi launches ambitious ‘Make in India’ campaign

India invites countries invest in its ambitious projects

United Nations, Sep 25 (PTI) India has invited countries like the UK, Norway and Greece to invest in ambitious projects and proposals unveiled by the new government to boost the economy.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj met her counterparts from UK, Sudan, the Maldives, Norway, Kyrgyzstan, Greece and Nigeria in back-to-back meetings after landing here yesterday.

Her counterparts conveyed their congratulations to the new government of India for its tremendous victory in the recent general elections.

SC declares National Tax Tribunal law as unconstitutional

New Delhi, Sep 25 (PTI) The Supreme Court today declared as unconstitutional the National Tax Tribunal Act under which a tribunal was set up to decide tax-related cases by taking away jurisdiction of high courts in such matters.

70 Army installations hit by floods, LoC posts relocated

Srinagar, Sept 22 (PTI) Seventy Army installations, including camps, bunkers and posts, have been hit by the devastating floods in Kashmir Valley but security forces have swiftly relocated the damaged and washed out posts to plug the gaps in the sensitive border areas.

The installations were partially submerged or totally inundated in the floods but security forces managed to rescue all troops manning them.

Probing Chidambaram’s role in Aircel-Maxis deal: CBI to court

New Delhi, Sep 22 (PTI) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday told the special 2G court hearing the Aircel-Maxis case that the FIPB approval given by former Finance Minister P Chidambaram in the deal was a “mistake”.

“The investment was of 800 million USD which is Rs 3,500 crore (approx). The FIPB approval (by the then Finance Minister) was a mistake. This is under investigation,” the Investigating Officer in the case told Special Judge O P Saini.

Those under preventive detention have right to vote: EC

New Delhi, Sep 21 (PTI) People under preventive detention have the right to vote, the Election Commission has said ahead of Assembly elections in Maharashtra and Haryana, and warned that there should be “no ground” for any grievance due to non-compliance of the directive.

India can rise again, I have a clear roadmap: Modi

Kejriwal, 3 others put on trial in defamation case

New Delhi, Sep 20 (PTI) Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, noted lawyer Prashant Bhushan and two others were today put on trial by a court here on charges of defamation in a complaint filed by ex-Telecom minister Kapil Sibal’s son Amit Sibal.

Metropolitan Magistrate Sunil Kumar Sharma framed charges against Kejriwal, Bhushan, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Manish Sisodia and Shazia Ilmi, who has quit the party, under section 500 (defamation) of the IPC.

Army hospital saving lives as health infrastructure crumbles

Srinagar, Sep 20 (PTI) At a time when almost the entire healthcare infrastructure in Srinagar city has been rendered ineffective by the devastating floods, the Army’s 92 Base Hospital here has saved the lives of more than 300 people including 35 newborns.

The army doctors without caring about their own houses and families affected by the floods have been working day and night at the 600-bed facility, the biggest army hospital in the entire Kashmir Valley.
