Agni-5 successfully test-fired

Balasore (Odisha), Jan 31 (PTI) India today successfully test-fired its indigenously developed, intercontinental surface-to-surface nuclear capable ballistic missile ?Agni-5?, which has a strike range of over 5000 kms and can carry a nuclear warhead of over one tonne, from Wheeler’s Island off Odisha coast.

The three stage, solid propellant “missile was test-fired from a mobile launcher from the launch complex-4 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at about 8.06 hours,” ITR Director M V K V Prasad said.

AAP vs BJP gets uglier, Bedi approaches police against Vishwas

New Delhi, Jan 31 (PTI) BJP’s Chief Ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi today filed a police complaint against AAP’s Kumar Viswas accusing him of making sexist comments against her while her party approached the Election Commission on the issue.

Viswas denied the allegations that he made remarks against Bedi and said he will quit politics if she can prove the same.

Bedi alleged that the AAP leader made the “derogatory sexist” remarks against her at a recent election rally.

UPA a practioner of “sadistic” economy: Jaitley after Natarajan’s charge

New Delhi, Jan 30 (PTI) Union Minister Arun Jaitley today said the previous UPA government was a practitioner of “sadistic” economy and “crony capitalism” after the attack by former minister Jayanthi Natarajan against Rahul Gandhi and sought a relook at its environmental clearances.

Jaitley sought a review of environmental projects granted clearance or rejected permission during the UPA regime after the former Environment Minister accused the Congress Vice Prresident of interference in green clearances for projects.

After Natarajan’s charge, NDA may review UPA green clearances

New Delhi, Jan 30 (PTI) The NDA government today indicated it will take a fresh look at environmental clearances for projects granted or rejected by the previous UPA government in the light of former Union Minister Jayanthi Natarajan’s allegation of interference by Rahul Gandhi.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said the outbursts by the former Environment Minister against the Congress Vice President showed that the UPA government was a practitioner of “sadistic” economy and “crony capitalism”.

Jayanthi Natarajan decides to quit Congress

Chennai, Jan 30 (PTI) In a huge blow to the Congress, former Union Minister Jayanthi Natarajan has decided to quit the party while making a scathing attack on Rahul Gandhi and accusing him of sending “specific requests” on environmental clearances for projects.

Natarajan has sent a letter to party chief Sonia Gandhi, in which she has charged that she was “wrongly vilified” and “defamed” in the media by sections of the party.

PM Modi pays tribute to Mahatma Gandhi

New Delhi, Jan 30 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi today paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary.

“My tributes to Pujya (respected) Bapu,” he tweeted.

The Father of the Nation was assassinated on this day in 1948 here.

Modi also paid tributes, on the Martyr’s Day today, to all those who have laid down their lives for the country.

“On Martyrs’ Day, I pay homage to each & every martyr who laid his or her life for our Nation.

Sunanda case: Amar Singh questioned

New Delhi, Jan 28 (PTI) Politician Amar Singh was today questioned for nearly two hours by a special team of Delhi Police probing the Sunanda Pushkar case after he had recently claimed that she had spoken to him about the IPL controversy a couple of days before her death.

Sources said that Singh was asked about what Sunanda had told him regarding the IPL controversy and about allegedly taking the blame for Shashi Tharoor.

Nithari killings: Koli’s death sentence commuted by HC

Allahabad, Jan 28 (PTI) The death sentence of Surender Koli, convicted in 2006 Nithari serial killings case, was today commuted to life imprisonment by the Allahabad High Court on the ground of “inordinate delay” in deciding his mercy petition.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice P K S Baghel held that execution of Koli’s death sentence would be “unconstitutional in view of the inordinate delay” in deciding his mercy petition.

China says it attaches “great importance” to Swaraj’s visit

Jerusalem, Jan 28 (AP) An anti-tank missile hit an Israeli military vehicle near the Israeli-Lebanese border today, the Israeli military said.

Lebanese security officials said Israel later fired 25 artillery shells into Lebanon.

The military did not immediately report any casualties.

The military said residents of the area have been ordered to remain in their homes.

Today’s attack took place near Mount Dov and Shebaa Farms, a disputed tract of land where the borders of Israel, Lebanon and Syria meet.
