28 more succumb to swine flu; Number of cases at 32,995

New Delhi, Mar 25 (PTI) Swine flu claimed 28 more lives as the toll inched towards the 2,000-mark while the number of persons affected by the H1N1 virus across the country touched almost 33,000.

Data collated by the Union Health Ministry said that as as on March 24, 1,975 persons have perished to the contagious disease while the number of people affected across various states now stands at 32,995.

India, Qatar ink six pacts after extensive talks

New Delhi, Mar 25 (PTI) India and energy-rich Qatar today signed six agreements including one on transfer of sentenced prisoners as the two countries sought to inject a fresh momentum in their bilateral ties.

The pacts were signed after Emir of Qatar Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani held extensive talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during which both the leaders discussed a range of issues including enhancing cooperation in energy sector and boosting trade and investment.

Plane with 150 on board crashes in French Alps

Paris, Mar 24 (AFP) A German airliner crashed near a ski resort in the French Alps today, killing all 150 people on board, in the worst plane disaster in mainland France in four decades.

France’s junior transport minister said there were “no survivors” from the crash of the Germanwings Airbus A320, a low-cost subsidiary of Lufthansa, in a remote part of the Alps that is extremely difficult to access.

Navy surveillance aircraft crashes in Goa; two missing

Panaji, Mar 25 (PTI) An Indian Navy surveillance aircraft crashed about 25 nautical miles south-west off Goa with two officers on-board missing.
A Dornier maritime surveillance aircraft, which was on a routine training sortie, crashed yesterday at around 11 pm and two officers on board have gone missing, navy sources said.

A search and rescue operation has been launched following the crash.

“One survivor has been rescued. Search is on to locate two more officers including a pilot and observer,” they said.

Stop cross-border infiltration: Mufti’s message to Pakistan

Jammu, Mar 23 (PTI) A day after he asked Pakistan to rein in terrorists, Chief Minister Mufti Mohmmad Sayeed today took up where he left off saying the neighbouring country should be told to halt cross-border infiltration into Jammu and Kashmir as it was a prerequisite for peace.

“I want to tell everybody, that Pakistan, Pakistani Prime Minister and Pakistani establishment should be told that nobody should be allowed to cross into this side from that side.

India, Pak back to sparring over Hurriyat

New Delhi, Mar 23 (PTI) India and Pakistan were today back to sparring over Kashmiri separatist Hurriyat leaders’ confabulations with Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit, with New Delhi making it clear that there was no role for a third party.

Basit, who has held meetings with Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and other separatist leaders and also invited them to the Pakistan National Day celebrations here, said that India was not against these interactions.

India asks Pak to end ‘atmosphere of terror’ along border

PM condoles death of Singapore’s founding father Lee Kuan Yew

New Delhi, March 23 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi today condoled the death of Singapore’s founding father Lee Kuan Yew whom he described as a lion among leaders.

“A far-sighted statesman and a lion among leaders, Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s life teaches valuable lessons to everyone. News of his demise is saddening,” he said in a statement.

“In this hour of bereavement, our prayers are with Mr.

Lee Kuan Yew’s family and the people of Singapore.

Sonia demands compensation for farmers hit by unseasonal rains

Attacks, an attempt by militants to raise their low morale: Parrikar

New Delhi, Mar 21 (PTI) The two back to back terror attacks in Jammu are an attempt by the militants to boost their morale which has come down due to the Army operations, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar today said.

“When the morale of the opponents are down, they make such attempts to boost it,” Parrikar said replying to questions about the attack by militants in Jammu and Kashmir today.
